BASEMENT CASE STUDY
Lenexa basement remodel with a custom bar, lounge, gym, and bathroom
This lower level was designed to feel like a true extension of the home, not leftover basement space with furniture pushed into it.
Built by Design created a custom bar, lounge, private gym, bathroom, built-in media wall, warm wood flooring, brick accents, layered lighting, and high-end finishes throughout.

DESIGN CHALLENGE
Separate functions, one connected basement
A good basement starts with layout. The bar and lounge needed to stay social, the gym needed privacy, and the bathroom and hallway had to feel like part of the finished plan.
BBD tied the rooms together with consistent flooring, brick, gray cabinetry, warm wood, dark doors, brass details, and layered lighting.
Planning had to account for
- Create separate basement zones without chopping up the lower level
- Keep the bar and lounge open to each other
- Give the gym privacy while keeping it visually connected
- Make the bathroom and hallway feel as finished as the main room
- Use warm materials so the gray palette did not feel cold
- Build storage, lighting, and media function into the design from the start
FINISHED BASEMENT
Warm, polished, and built around how the homeowners live
The finished lower level gives the family a place to host at the bar, watch TV in the lounge, work out in a dedicated gym, use a full bathroom, and keep storage tucked behind finished doors.

The bar includes storage, refrigeration, sink space, display shelving, glassware storage, and layered lighting.
The dedicated gym gives the homeowners a private workout space that still feels connected to the rest of the basement.
Glass doors separate the home gym while keeping the lower level open, bright, and visually connected.
The built-in media wall adds storage, hides clutter, and gives the TV area a finished custom look.
Even the transition spaces were finished with intention, using brick, dark doors, white trim, and light wood flooring.
The finished bathroom makes the lower level more useful for guests, workouts, entertaining, and daily use.
FINISHED ZONES
The square footage finally has a job
Custom bar
Gray cabinetry, warm wood counters, floating shelves, glassware storage, beverage refrigeration, ice maker, sink, brick backsplash, pendant lighting, and island seating make the bar the anchor of the basement.
Lounge area
Leather seating, wood-framed chairs, layered textiles, a round coffee table, soft rug, wall art, and recessed lighting create a comfortable second living room.
Built-in media wall
Custom gray cabinetry, brass hardware, and a shiplap-style accent wall give the TV area storage, balance, and a finished focal point.
Private home gym
Glass doors, mirrors, light wood flooring, wall fans, treadmills, weights, mats, storage, and a beverage fridge give the homeowners a real workout room.
Finished bathroom
A gray vanity, white counter, black fixtures, round mirror, globe lighting, herringbone-style floor tile, and dark shower tile make the bathroom feel intentional.
Transition spaces
Light wood flooring, gray walls, white trim, dark doors, brick accents, storage doors, and clean lighting keep the hallway from feeling like an afterthought.
