Overland Park basement remodel with custom bar and outdoor living space

This Overland Park project is centered on connection. The completed lower level includes a custom media wall, fireplace, bar, bathroom, flexible family space, exterior access, and a covered outdoor living area with a fireplace, water features, planters, hardscape, privacy elements, and a grill station. That is not one isolated room. It is a set of indoor and outdoor spaces that have to feel related.

Inside, the remodel gave the lower level a stronger living-room function. The media wall combines a mounted TV, linear fireplace, darker built-ins, warm wood shelves, display storage, and room for everyday items. Nearby, the bar adds refrigeration, wine storage, sink space, floating shelves, stone-style counters, and natural wood cabinetry. The lower level also includes flexible family space, desk space, storage, exterior access, and a modern bathroom with a glass shower.

Outside, the project extends into a covered patio and backyard living area. The outdoor space includes a wood ceiling, lounge seating, fireplace feature, water elements, built-in planters, pavers, landscape stone, privacy walls, and a grill station. The scope works because the backyard is treated as finished living space, not just landscaping around the house.

The challenge was continuity. A finished basement can feel disconnected from the backyard if the interior and exterior are designed as separate projects. Here, the lower level needed to support relaxing, hosting, storage, and family use, while the outdoor space needed to feel like a natural extension of that same lifestyle.

The basement also had to include custom features without crowding the living areas. Built-ins, display shelves, a linear fireplace, bar storage, a desk area, flexible family storage, and a bathroom all compete for wall space. If every feature became its own focal point, the lower level would feel busy. The design had to give the media wall and bar enough presence while still letting the room breathe.

Outside, the design had to coordinate more than furniture. The covered patio, fireplace, planters, water features, grill station, hardscape, drainage, exterior materials, and privacy elements all affect each other. A backyard like this only feels calm when the construction details are planned as part of one outdoor room.

The lower level solution starts with the custom media wall. The darker cabinetry grounds the room, while the warm wood shelves and decorative wood inserts keep the feature from feeling too heavy. The linear fireplace gives the lounge a focal point below the TV, and the built-ins add storage and display so the room can stay useful without filling up with extra furniture.

The bar supports the same hosting story. Natural wood cabinetry, dark tile, floating shelves, beverage refrigeration, wine storage, and sink space give the homeowners a proper lower-level entertaining zone. It sits close enough to the lounge to support gatherings, but it has enough detail to stand as its own feature.
