Lenexa Basement Remodel

This Lenexa project started with an unfinished basement and a clear opportunity: create a lower level the family would use all week, not just when guests came over. The homeowners wanted a full basement remodel with a custom bar for entertaining, an easy place for end-of-workday drinks, built-in cabinets for storage, display areas for sports memorabilia and important life moments, a comfortable theater spot for family movie nights, and a basement bathroom that felt bright, colorful, and connected to the rest of the design.

Because the space didn't have a lot of natural light, the basement couldn't lean on windows to do the work. The design needed to create brightness through the layout, cabinet colors, flooring, lighting, wall color, and reflective surfaces. Built by Design used a light, airy backdrop, pale wood-look flooring, white built-ins, bright counters, and recessed lighting to make the lower level feel open rather than tucked away.

The bar became the social anchor. It includes a blue island, white counters, seating, drink fridges, a sink, a patterned backsplash, pendant lights, display cabinets, and brass details. Beyond the bar, the plan includes long runs of white built-in cabinetry, open shelving for memorabilia, a media wall for movie nights, and a bathroom that carries the same blue-and-bright personality into a smaller room.

The biggest challenge was turning a lower level with limited natural light into a space that still felt lively and welcoming. A basement can easily feel heavy if every finish is dark or every function is pushed against the walls. This family wanted a place that felt upbeat, comfortable, and useful, so the remodel had to balance storage, entertainment, and open floor area without making the room feel crowded.

The homeowners also had meaningful items they wanted to see every day. Sports memorabilia, KU wall art, family keepsakes, and pieces tied to important life moments needed more than a spare shelf. They needed built-ins that looked intentional, protected the items visually, and still kept the basement clean enough for entertaining. That meant the storage plan had to do two jobs at once: hide the everyday clutter behind cabinet doors and celebrate the pieces worth displaying.

The bar added another layer to the challenge. It needed to support drinks, snacks, hosting, and casual weeknight use, but it couldn't take over the whole basement. The family still needed a theater area, open circulation, storage, and a bathroom. The final plan had to feel connected, with each zone close enough to be social but distinct enough to serve its own purpose.

Built by Design created a basement that feels finished, bright, and personal by organizing the space around clear zones. The custom bar sits at the front of the lower level with a rich blue island, white countertops, brass hardware, black-and-brass pendant lights, and a white herringbone-style backsplash. Drink fridges and a sink make the bar useful for entertaining, while the long island gives guests a place to sit without blocking movement through the basement.

The built-ins give the basement its personal layer. White storage cabinetry lines one wall, giving the family plenty of closed storage for games, seasonal items, supplies, and anything that doesn't need to stay visible. Across from it, open display shelving turns memorabilia, books, photos, keepsakes, and sports pieces into part of the room. The shelving gives the homeowners a way to show off important life moments without making the basement feel cluttered.

The family movie area is set apart with a wood-accent media wall, dark base cabinets, a mounted TV, and comfortable seating. It's close enough to the bar that snacks and drinks are easy, but it still feels like its own theater spot for movie nights. The light floor helps connect the bar, storage area, play area, and media lounge, while the pale blue walls and recessed lighting keep the lower level from feeling closed in.

KU personality shows up in the art and sports displays, which gives the basement a real sense of ownership. Instead of designing a generic entertaining space, the remodel makes room for the family's teams, memories, and routines. That's what keeps the finished basement from feeling staged. It's built for how they actually live.

The basement bathroom needed to feel just as finished as the main entertaining space. Built by Design carried the blue palette into the vanity and paired it with a white counter, brass hardware, black fixtures, and light tile so the room stayed bright. The patterned wallpaper brings in color and movement, echoing the playful energy of the basement without making the bathroom feel disconnected.

The shower uses light marble-look tile and a glass enclosure to keep the room open. That matters in a basement bathroom, where too many dark finishes can make the room feel smaller than it should. The final bathroom is practical for guests, movie nights, and family use, but it's also fun enough to match the rest of the basement.
