Overland Park Basement Remodel with Wet Bar and Movie Theater

This Overland Park project was a full basement remodel, and the goal was to make the lower level feel open, useful, and ready for several kinds of entertaining. The homeowners wanted more than one place to sit and watch TV. They needed a basement that could handle drinks at the bar, casual gathering around the fireplace, storage for everyday items, a refreshed bathroom, a tucked-away desk area, and a separate movie theater room for true movie nights.

Built by Design opened up the basement and added a new wet bar with a TV in the bar area, warm wood cabinetry, island seating, a sink, new appliances, a drink fridge, display storage, and plenty of cabinet storage. The bar became one of the main anchors of the open basement because it gives people a natural place to gather while still staying connected to the lounge and fireplace feature wall.

The scope also included a remodeled bathroom with a new vanity, a large statement light, updated lighting, patterned flooring, and a tiled shower. Storage was a major part of the plan, both at the bar and in the dedicated theater room. Under the stairs, the remodel added a hidden desk nook, which turns an awkward leftover area into a small workspace with personality. The basement also gained a full movie theater with recliner seating, a projector, paneled walls, built-in storage, and a popcorn station for movie nights.

The main challenge was balance. The basement needed to feel open, but it couldn't feel empty. It needed a wet bar, a fireplace lounge, a bathroom, a hidden desk nook, and a separate movie theater, but it couldn't feel crowded or chopped into unrelated rooms. If the layout relied too heavily on walls, the basement would've lost the open feeling the homeowners wanted. If everything stayed too loose, the finished space wouldn't have had enough purpose.

The wet bar had to support entertaining without becoming the only feature in the basement. With a TV in the bar area, island seating, drink refrigeration, new appliances, and display storage, the bar naturally draws attention. Built by Design had to make it substantial while still leaving room for the fireplace lounge and circulation through the rest of the lower level.

The theater spaces added another layer. The open lounge has a fireplace feature wall for casual watching and gathering, while the dedicated movie theater gives the family a more immersive room with recliner seating and a popcorn stand. Those two spaces needed to feel related but not redundant. One is for everyday lounging and entertaining; the other is for the full movie-night experience.

The main basement area was organized around the wet bar and lounge. The bar uses warm natural wood cabinetry, a large island, white counters, glass-front display cabinets, open shelving, a sink, stainless appliances, and a TV mounted within the bar wall. The island gives guests a place to sit, while the TV makes the bar useful for game days, casual drinks, and nights when people naturally gather around the counter.

Storage was built into the bar in several ways. Tall cabinetry, lower cabinets, display cabinets, pantry-style shelving, and drink storage help the homeowners keep bottles, glassware, small appliances, serving pieces, and everyday basement items in one place. The drink fridge and new appliances support entertaining so the basement can function on its own without constant trips upstairs.

Across from the bar, the open theater lounge centers on a long fireplace feature wall. The wall-mounted TV and linear fireplace create a comfortable everyday viewing area, while the sectional seating keeps the room relaxed. The fireplace feature wall gives this part of the basement a strong focal point, and the open layout lets the lounge, bar, and circulation paths feel connected rather than boxed in.

The geometric feature wall and layered lighting add another finished moment in the open basement. Instead of relying only on furniture to define the lounge, the wall treatment and ceiling lighting give the space a more designed feel. It's useful for entertaining, but it also feels polished when the family is just using the basement on a quiet night.

One of the biggest additions was the dedicated movie theater room. This space is separate from the open lounge, which lets it feel more immersive. Recliner theater chairs, a projector, paneled walls, wall sconces, recessed lighting, a soft floor surface, built-in storage, and a popcorn station all work together to create the full movie-night setup.

The theater room gives the homeowners a place where movies can feel like an event. The recliners make the room comfortable for longer viewing, the projector setup gives the space a true theater function, and the popcorn machine adds the kind of small detail people remember. It's practical, but it's also fun, which matters in a basement designed around how the family wants to spend time together.

The storage in the theater room keeps the space from feeling messy. Built-ins below the paneled walls can hold media equipment, blankets, games, accessories, and theater supplies. That means the room can feel relaxed and ready to use without clutter taking over the experience.

The bathroom remodel gave the basement a more finished guest-ready feel. The new vanity uses warm wood cabinetry, black hardware, a white counter, and a large mirror. A statement light above the vanity adds sparkle, while patterned floor tile and floral wall details bring personality into the room. The tiled shower, visible from the vanity area, gives the bathroom a clean updated finish.

The bathroom's materials connect back to the rest of the basement through natural wood, black accents, light surfaces, and decorative lighting. It feels coordinated without matching the bar exactly. That makes it feel like a designed bathroom, not just a support space at the edge of the basement.

The hidden under-stair desk nook is one of the most creative uses of space in the remodel. Instead of leaving the area under the stairs as dead space, Built by Design turned it into a tucked-away workspace with floral wallcovering, a small desk, accent lighting, and a comfortable chair. It can work as a homework spot, a small planning desk, or a quiet little workspace while still staying visually playful.

The material palette is warm and functional. Natural wood cabinetry and trim give the wet bar and bathroom warmth. White counters and white backsplash surfaces keep the bar bright. Black hardware, iron stair rail details, and darker theater finishes add contrast. The new flooring helps connect the open basement spaces, while soft carpet in the theater room supports comfort and sound control.

Lighting is a major part of this remodel. Pendant lights define the bar area, the bathroom statement light creates a more finished vanity moment, the lounge uses recessed and feature lighting, and the movie theater room uses sconces and recessed lights to create a darker, more controlled viewing atmosphere. Each area has lighting that fits its job.

The finished basement feels like several spaces working together: an open bar and lounge for hosting, a fireplace feature wall for everyday watching, a hidden desk nook for focused work, a remodeled bath for guests, and a full theater room for movie nights. That's the difference between a basement that's simply finished and a basement that's genuinely planned.
